Our Organization Environmental Commitment

Environmental Commitment

Green Team

Environmental sustainability and conservation are key concerns for an organization dedicated to science and technology. Science World works hard to educate its external audiences, and to promote personal and collective environmental responsibility among staff and volunteers.

Science World’s Green Team is making strides in this direction. This committee-based initiative, formed by volunteer staff, is the leading advocate for environmental issues within the organization.

The Green Dome Challenge is our Science World's internal campaign to reduce energy and material waste, and develop more sustainable work practices.

Green Team Initiatives

  • BC Green Games, a new contest for K-12 that documents students' eco-actions using creative media such as videos, photo-essays or podcasts.
  • Participation in Jack Bell Ride-Share program.
  • Paperless paystubs and timesheets.
  • Installation of LED lights on dome.
  • Hosted Bike Shorts film festival to encourage biking.
  • 'Earth-friendly' diapers in Kaleidoscope.
  • BC Hydro Energy Conservation awareness program.
  • Electronic versions of field trip guides and Members’ newsletter.
  • Installation of Dysen Airblade hand dryers.
  • Double-sided printing on all print material (saving paper costs and trees)
  • Establish relationships with eco-friendly office suppliers, fabricators and printers.
  • CRT Monitors upgraded to flat screen LCD, yielding a huge saving in energy.
  • Green Mugs program/partnership with Triple O’s.
  • Participation in BC Hydro’s Turn it off Campaign.
  • Bike to Work Week, encouraging secondary transportation.
  • Turn it Off sticker campaign in staff spaces.
  • More environmentally friendly birthday parties program, including fun re-usable dishes/cutlery, an energy efficient dishwasher and a cooperation with food suppliers to reduce waste.
  • Reusable shopping bags (instead of big black bags) in staff garbage cans.
  • Original Boris Brothers' Banner Bags in Kaleidoscope (made with 100% reused materials from Science World).
  • Improved storage and management of reusable, recyclable materials in the workshop.
  • Paperless work order system for Graphics, Building Engineering, Kaleidoscope and Payroll.
  • Use of recycled papers and green printing techniques for print collateral.
  • Email instead of faxes whenever possible.
  • Improved research into environmentally friendly fabrication of exhibits and signage.
