FSL-Frequently Asked Questions
FUTURE SCIENCE LEADERS – Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How old do I have to be?
A. Future Science Leaders is designed for students in Grades 10 and 11 as of September 2011.
Q. How much time will I have to dedicate to the program outside of the weekly meetings?
A. Each week will be designed differently with multiple types of Science and Technology being covered over the 9 month program. You may be asked to read an article or watch an online documentary prior to class or complete an activity at home. We envision a maximum of an additional 2 hours a week outside of the weekly meetings.
Q. What if I can’t make it to one of the weekly meetings?
A. You will need to advise the program organizer/s prior to the class. You must have a 90% attendance rate to be eligible for additional benefits to the program such as possible scholarships or additional field trips.
Q. Can we send in more than one school or one professional reference?
A. Please only submit one personal and one professional reference. If you send in more references, we will choose only one reference at random so you should just send in the best one!
Q. How much does the program cost?
A. The program costs $475. This will be a one-time fee paid once the applicant has accepted the offer of the position in the program. There are bursaries available so no student will be rejected from the program based on monetary constraints.
Q. What is that money going towards?
A. The money collected from all students will go back into the program through scholarships and or additional field trips.
Q. Can parents be involved in the program?
A. Please contact the program organizers at fslinfo@scienceworld.ca for more information if your parents want to be involved in the program.
Q. Will this program count towards my school results?
A. This program is not a part of the high school curriculum, therefore will not count towards your school results. We do expect that lessons learned will be helpful for your courses.
Q. Will we be graded on our projects?
A. You will not be formally assessed on your projects but you will receive feedback. We all also encourage and support students who wish to enter their project in competitions and science fairs across North America.
Q. Can my references be faxed or emailed to you?
A. Your professional and school references can be faxed, however we would prefer for your teachers or professional references to email them to us at fslinfo@scienceworld.ca .
Q. Is there support offered to ensure all of my school work and extracurricular activities are all balanced?
A. Outside of your personal and school community, there will be a number of program organizers and Science World community that will be available to offer further support and mentoring. However, your final schedule and commitments are your responsibility.
Q. Will this assist with/be applicable to my university application?
A. This program can be included in your extracurricular activities and bolster your application to universities. However, there is no current formal recognition from the universities for raising the profile of your application.
Q. Will all of the sessions take place at Science World at TELUS World of Science?
A. Each weekly meeting will take place at Science World at TELUS World of Science unless there is a field trip or industry tour that you are able to attend.
