Planning for both the Science World renovations and SWITCH: The Outdoor Science Experience has been done closely with the City of Vancouver — including the staff of the Planning, Office of Cultural Affairs, Parks, and Engineering Departments — in order to ensure that the concept integrates well with City projects, policies, and aspirations.
In 2003 Phillips Farevag Smallenberg (PFS) was commissioned by Science World to respond to the City of Vancouver’s plans for Creekside Park, the park which surrounds Science World. The mandate of PFS was to include all elements necessary to make a successful outdoor science park as well as resolve existing and resulting park problems.
The guiding principles for Science World’s planning include:
- City of Vancouver’s plans for current decking
- Pedestrian & Bikeway Paths
- Transportation & Parking
- Drop-off, Loading & Queuing
- Interface with Creekside Park and waterfront
- Built Form & Architectural Treatment
- Community ‘Fit’
