Careers Student Work Experience

Student Work Experience

We offer all Lower Mainland secondary students in Grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to gain valuable volunteer work experience at our science centre. Teachers are invited to sign up students who they feel would benefit from a placement at Science World.

Scheduling

There are several two-week (80 hours) placement periods throughout the year, the first of which begins in September, following the school year calendar.

We can accommodate a maximum of eight students during each placement period. All placements begin on the Monday and continue until the second following Sunday. Days off are staggered so that there are five or six students in the building on any given day, including weekends and holidays.

Hours are 9:00 am–5:15 pm Monday to Friday and 9:15 am–5:15 pm weekends and holidays.

Available placement dates for the 2008/09 school year

Registration

The registration process is on a first-come, first-served basis. Register your students as soon as possible, as placements do fill up quickly.

  1. Contact Science World in writing (fax or email.) No telephone reservations please.
  2. Indicate how many placements you would like to reserve, for any of the work terms listed. Each student requires one placement. No more than 2 students from the same school on each placement.
  3. Science World will contact you within five days of your request regarding the status of your application.
  4. If the desired term is full, your student(s) will be placed on a waiting list, and you will be kept apprised of the status.
  5. No later than three weeks prior to the start of the work term, please contact Science World and confirm your reserved placements by submitting the students’ names and phone numbers. Failure to do so will result in the loss of the placements to student(s) on the waiting list.
    • If you have students on the waiting list, you will be contacted 3 weeks prior to the placement about any available openings.
  6. Following confirmation, students will be contacted for an interview to determine suitability. If your students are found to be unsuitable for a placement, you will be contacted directly for a replacement.
