When I lived in Japan studying barnacles, I was surprised at how many ads for "energy" drinks I saw. They are also the people who have a word for "death from overwork." So perhaps it is no surprise that a Japanese scientist should find that just the smell of coffee could be a way to keep workers working when they haven't had enough sleep. They only used rats for the experiment. I don't drink coffee, but if you do, maybe you could take the next step and see if aroma does it for you as well as the liquid.
