Ruppy The Fluorescent Red Transgenic Dog.

Last Updated (Thursday, 07 May 2009 09:14) Written by Raymond Nakamura

How about this for a new kids' book/TV show?

Once upon a time, some Korean scientists decided to make transgenic dogs. They thought these could help understand how humans work. They chose a special gene found in a sea anemone. It makes a protein that glows red under ultraviolet light. This makes it easy to see whether or not cells have the gene. They added this gene to a virus.

Viruses are good at inserting themselves into cell nuclei. The virus inserted the special gene into the nucleus of a dog cell. The scientists took this modified nucleus and put it into a cell with its nucleus removed. The cell divides and divides and all the new cells have this added gene. The embryo grows up to be a dog that glows red under ultraviolet light.

This shows the scientists know how to make dogs with modified genes.

Now they can try this with other genes to see what happens.

The End of the Beginning

And the moral of the story is? I don't know. Do you think there is a moral to the story?

That was a fascinating link. I liked the part about how if it makes no sense, it must be divine...

I'm reminded of some of the attempts to create a biblical Red Heifer.

I'm glad you appreciated that.
My daughter enjoys that show. They say Clifford grew so big because of love, but I'm betting he was also a transgenic experiment.

It is a very good play on Clifford the big red dog.
