What Would You Do with an Invisible Cloak?

Last Updated (Monday, 18 August 2008 16:33) Written by Raymond Nakamura

Harry Potter had a magic cloak of invisibility and James Bond had an invisible car. As Arthur C. Clarke said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Now scientists have come up with a material, or metamaterial as they call it, which interacts with light in a weird way, so stuff looks invisible. It's just on a small scale so far. I can't help thinking that invisibility would almost inevitably turn to naughtiness. The Olympics would have to start testing for invisible helpers. Anyway, I'll believe when I don't see it.

0 #3 Inspire vs Hinder — Raymond Nakamura 2008-08-19 18:29
That's a really interesting reading list.
It seems like the stories are not really hindering science, but perhaps slowing the adoption of the technologies.
Thanks for proving to me that somebody is reading this!

0 #2 Invisible Naughtiness — Kerry 2008-08-19 11:49
Check out this sci-fi vs. science wrap up http://io9.com/5024631/the-science-fiction-stories-that-inspire-and-hinder-real-science

But I can't help but agree with Raymond that invisibility will inevitably lead to naughtiness, whether it be on a personal, urban, corporate or military scale. What good can invisibility actually achieve?

0 #1 Science Fiction Inspires Science Fact — Kerry 2008-08-19 10:58
Science fiction often inspires research and development, and the real life results usually captivate the imagination the way the idea did in the first place.
