The following are consultation topics that came out of the City and Parks Board review of Science World’s proposal. Please consider them before providing your feedback.
Consultation Topics
Location and size of SWITCH
The Outdoor Science Experience will require approximately 3,237 square metres of land, and will provide interactive science exhibits for Science World visitors. Of this space, 775 square metres is within Science World’s lease and 2,420 is currently outside our lease. Science World is requesting 3,195 square metres of public space in order to make SWITCH: The Outdoor Science Experience. Currently, this public space includes paved or landscaped pathways, and some public green space.
Science World interface with Terminal Avenue and Quebec Street
The visibility of the Science World facility, and the flow of pedestrian traffic from Terminal Ave, would be improved by creating a public plaza with a significant canopy to provide seating and weather protection. This plaza will align the Science World entry with Terminal Ave.
Public path improvements
The proposal provides wider, safer and more clear bike and pedestrian pathways around the Science World facility and connecting the north Creekside Park pathways with South East False Creek and the Olympic village. The bike and pedestrian pathways along the edge of SWITCH would be separated by plantings and lined with trees and will provide a green corridor that joins north and south Creekside Park.
Science World servicing
Currently, the Science World facility is serviced at three disparate locations around the facility. This current situation sometimes creates chaotic and unsafe traffic patterns. The proposed consolidates and simplifies building servicing by positioning a new loading bay to the northeast of the building. This change will simplify and clarify the pedestrian and bicycle paths, and will make the movements around our facility more controlled and safer.
Playground
The proposed outdoor exhibition and gallery space requires the relocation of the children’s playground adjacent and to the east of our building. Two possible locations for the playground are immediatelt east of SWITCH, or the north end of Creekside Park.
