Ever since Expo..

I remember Science World being the Expo Centre during Expo 86 when I was a kid - before they added the new front in 1988 and SkyTrain was so new it had blue carpet.. What a sight to see. I remember my grannie taking me downtown for lunch and we watched the whole thing being built when we had lunch on Main Street...
I am glad Vancouver saved it, it is by far this city's most incredible and fun landmarks.... even if gondolas no longer float from it. It is fun, and as an adult I still learn something new from it each time I visit. The dome lit up at night, the old fireworks behind it - it never ceases to still bring out my inner kid... almost 25 years later!

I like that every year my Dad took me to see all the magicians during my schools Christmas break. I liked that magic and science were fun. It's what we do every year at science world when I come home to Canada.

From ASTC to Scienceworld to Telus World of Science. Having worked at Scienceworld for four years and now as a member with children, I am continually baffled by the fact that we can exhibit and educate the general public with a fascinating mix of educational and entertaining media, but will we ever solve the entry/exit area in the lobby of the building?
Budding Scientists

As a non-schooling family, we always loved science and went to the Calgary science centre every week. We visit science centres around the world in every country we visit that has one. Vancouver's Science World is one of the best and we never miss a visit when we are here. I have five photos of my five children standing up against the outside of the building so I can see how they grow every year. It's a tradition. Now that the older children have finished high school, they have done well in science, not through textbooks, but through hands-on, and fun experiential exploration.
My Favourite Exhibits

Leonardo DaVinci Machines: I spent the night alone, after hours photographing the DaVinci exhibit when I worked there one summer. It was very spooky being alone in the building at night. Then the Aliens came. Mrs. Alien seemed so much bigger when she fought Sigourney Weaver. Hey! Whatever happened to my photographs of the Laser Show? Whose desk are they in now? Anyway, it was a terrific summer there and a terrific science fair. All the best to everyone there inside the Globe. Visit me here at Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump sometime.

My husband and I took our children to Science World 20 years ago when it first opened in a building, which I believe was on Granville Street. There were eight or nine storeys so it required taking flights of stairs either up or down to the different floors to visit the various exhibits. It was a fun, hands on, multi-sensory learning experience then for our children and still is today for our youngest. After Expo '86, the new location for Science World made it possible to view so many interesting exhibits and shows in a far more conducive setting.
Elevator mishap

I have many fond memories of Science World, don't get me wrong; it was my favourite place in the world as a kid. However, the one that sticks in my head the most is when I was about six (so, late nineties) and managed to get my thumb stuck in the elevator door somehow.

Science World is helping me to raise my son to have respect for science and progress. Nothing makes me happier than this.
So many memories . . .

I have many great memories from working at SW; The Fun Guys, the Duct Tape Dudes, Stuttering Wombat films, the behind the scenes hi-jinks on fellow floor staff and myself, plus April Fool's Day happenings.

The inspirational include the children coming back and remembering the school programs that I taught them; seeing others do magic tricks and being able to perform my own as a warm up for centre stage shows. This has led to me becoming a semi-professional magician with an incredible repetoire of tricks.

The best thing about working at SW, however, were all the volunteers and co-workers. You could always count on all of them for just about anything at any given time. I will forever treasure my time spent with all of you.

PS
Could someone please give Garth a roll of duct tape? ;)

I first came to Science World during the summer of 1991. I loved it so much, and had such a great time, that I turned around to my mother and told her I really wanted to work here one day. 7 years later, I was. Its now my son's favourite place to visit, and one day, he wants to be a scientist!
Something for Everyone

My eldest son loved playing with the puzzles. He built our home computers, is going into computing science, and is our very own tech person.

My second son always loved jumping, playing, and running on the giant piano. He is in a band, plays the guitar as his first instrument and the piano as his second is college, and plays the guitar in church. (He cried once when he was little because he was not chosen to go up on Centre Stage).

My youngest son, 12, is always fascinated by the fire balloon above Centre Stage. At the High School Open House, he was so proud that he already knew how (the secret) to make ice-cream (from Science Camp).

I love the look on my son's face when he figures out how something at Science World works. I can just imagine all the thoughts bouncing around in his brain trying to figure it all out. But what I like most is the conversations we have after leaving Science World at TELUS World of Science--he's full of questions and explanations for me.
