Environmental Commitment

Environmental sustainability and conservation are key concerns for an organization like ours that is dedicated to science and technology leadership. Science World works hard to educate the members of our community and promote personal and collective environmental responsibility among staff and volunteers. Key initiatives include:

  • BC Green Games, a contest for K-12 students that documents their eco-actions using creative media such as videos, photo-essays or podcasts
  • Green Month, our annual festival for sharing and celebrating environmental success stories
  • The creation, opening, and programming of the Ken Spencer Science Park
  • Our indoor sustainability gallery, Our World
  • Our new Green Roof and Green Lab
  • The conversion of our dome lights to LED
  • The installation of Dyson Airblade hand dryers within our building
  • Creating a more environmentally friendly birthday parties program, including fun re-usable dishes/cutlery, an energy efficient dishwasher and a cooperation with food suppliers to reduce waste

Science World's Green Team

This committee-based initiative, formed by volunteer staff, is the leading advocate for environmental issues within the organization. Green Team initiatives have included:

  • Paperless paystubs and timesheets
  • Hosting the Bike Shorts film festival to encourage biking
  • BC Hydro Energy Conservation awareness program
  • Electronic versions of field trip guides and Members’ newsletter
  • Double-sided printing on all print material (saving paper costs and trees)
  • Establishing relationships with eco-friendly office suppliers, fabricators and printers
  • Participation in BC Hydro’s Turn it off Campaign
  • Participation annually in Earth Hour
  • Bike to Work Week, encouraging secondary transportation
  • Turn it Off sticker campaign in staff spaces
  • Gift bags made of recycled plastic sold in Kaleidoscope, our science store
  • Paperless work order system for Graphics, Building Engineering, Workshop and Payroll
  • Use of recycled papers and green printing techniques for print collateral
  • Email instead of faxes whenever possible
  • Improved research into environmentally friendly fabrication of exhibits and signage
