This week- Communities as Classrooms: Finding Inspiration Locally
June 5 is World Environment Day! Along with our partners at the Classrooms to Communities (C2C) Education Network, we will explore how students and families can use their local places to support learning connected to curriculum. Join our special guests, educators Megan Zeni and Alex Johansen, as they share tips on safe outdoor learning and sustainability in the context of place-based learning. This session is suitable for educators and caregivers.
Megan Zeni is a mom, teacher, master gardener, and outdoor learning advocate with over 20 years of K-7 teaching experience. She is a champion for taking children outdoors in all kinds of weather to learn, play, and grow! Megan currently teaches in an urban outdoor and garden classroom, and is a PhD student in the faculty of education at UBC. Megan is an unstructured nature play enthusiast who spends her downtime with her family hiking, boating, and skiing in this beautiful province we call home! Keep up with ideas and resources for outdoor learning and gardening with kids by signing up for her newsletter at meganzeni.com or follow her at @roomtoplay
Alex Johansen was brought up by the rolling canola fields and quartzite mountains of Alberta in Tsuu T'ina/Métis/Plains Cree (Treaty 6) ancestral territory. She has worked as an educator with Parks Canada, OceanWise, and IslandWood and completed her MA.Ed. in Urban Environmental Education looking at the interface between social justice and the urban environment. She now uses these lenses when designing programs and evaluating exhibits as the Outdoor Learning & Sustainability Program Specialist at Science World.
This session will be held on Zoom. Meeting details will be emailed upon registration.
