About Skwachàys Lodge Artist in Residence Program:
The Artists in Residence Program opportunity at Skwachàys Lodge is a unique and life-changing housing program for practicing Indigenous artists. This includes subsidized housing in clean, unfurnished bachelor suites, 24/7 access to shared artist workshops, and participation in programming opportunities for personal/professional development that help artists develop their craft and move into the next phase of their careers. A multi-term residency is dependent on successful program participation and the achievement of self-defined career goals. Emerging, mid-career, and senior artists are welcome to apply.
Dana Justine Belcourt is a Métis/Cree artist from Amiskwaciy Waskahikan. Through paintings, zines, and media-based art forms, her work showcases an intensive writing practice that deals with intimacy, storytelling, love, and being someone of mixed Indigenous ancestry. Their main focus is producing and self-publishing zines featuring poetry and mixed-media art. Another focus is painting murals showcasing experiences and stories, and has so far collaborated on nine murals. They hope for their work to be a lens into contemporary Indigenous storytelling and experiences. They are currently working towards completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University.
Lydia Brown is an interdisciplinary artist, expanding and developing her skills in woodworking, film, and painting. She considers herself fortunate to weave into studios and creative spaces assisting artists with a passion for canoe building, film, and travelling with youth on the Tribal Journeys.
Lydia is from Snuneymuxw First Nation and T'Souke First Nation located in the centre of Coast Salish territory on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island. Her ancestral name is Teethulwut and she was raised in Snuneymuxw. Lydia moved to Vancouver, BC to obtain her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
Mike Alexander is an emerging Anishinaabe visual artist and writer originally from Swan Lake First Nation in Treaty #1 Territory. Adopted out to a non-Indigenous family shortly after birth, Mike is a 60’s Scoop survivor, a second-generation Residential School survivor who grew up in Winnipeg, having no connection to his community, language, or culture until his early 20’s.
Mike attended the University of Victoria, the Victoria College of Art, and the Vancouver Island School of Art. Mike received mentorship from a Master of the Woodlands School of Art, Mark Anthony Jacobson (Anishinaabe), who served to transmit cultural knowledge and artistic skill.
Rosie Johnnie-Mills belongs to the Xinipsen Cowichan and Skidegate Haida Nations of the Pacific West Coast. Rosie studied pottery with teacher Erdman Tuemp. Skwachays Lodge Artist in Residence Program has provided the opportunity for her to have her own Pottery studio. Science World has given Rosie her very first exhibition to showcase her pottery.
