Sustainability Saturdays: Astronaut Gardening

Let’s Be Astronauts—in The Garden!

Join us at our first Sustainability Saturday workshop series of the year!

What’s astronaut gardening, you wonder? Discover how astronauts grow food in space and—in the future—on Mars! Participants will also take home an out-of-this-world Tomatosphere experiment. And also we highly encourage you to visit our space-themed feature exhibition, Artemis Space Adventure with LEGO® Bricks, when you head back into the Dome!

During this hands-on workshop, astronaut gardeners alike will:

  • Learn how future interplanetary farming could be both sustainable and tasty
  • Explore how astronauts currently grow food in space with hydroponics systems
  • Build and take home a small seed germination systems using rockwool: adding nutrients, adjusting the pH of the water, and sowing two seeds.
  • Take home a real-life science experiment to explore how space, and space-like conditions, impacts tomato seed germination.
  • Learn how to continue growing your very own SPACE TOMATOES this year!

This workshop is ideal for budding gardeners over five. Participants will participate in a seed germination experiment collecting data after the workshop. To know which seed was subjected to spacelike conditions, participants will need to return data they collected.

Sign up now to secure your spot. We can’t wait to see you there!
