Get to know the four lovely hens currently living in our Science Park

Keeping Backyard Chickens

Meet our chickens!

Downy the Brahma

Downy the Brahma

Hatch Date: April 1, 2012
Breed: Brahma
Traits: dominant, greedy, secretly loves cuddles

What is the first thing people notice about you?

D: Inevitable, it's my size. Yes, I'm bigger than the other hens, but that does NOT make me a rooster! Once you're done ogling my size, check out my feathered feet and fierce eyes, those are my captivating features.

What is your favourite pastime?

D: That's tough. It's probably a tie between dust bathing in the coop (so refreshing) and reflecting on my day under the shady trees, by the outdoor stage.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

D: MEALWORMS. Larvae, pupae, every stage of the life cycle. What a treat!

Gourd the Buff Orpington

Gourd the Buff Orpington

Hatch Date: April 1, 2012
Breed: Buff Orpington
Traits: affectionate, talkative and needy

What is the first thing people notice about you?

G: BAAWK BAWK BAGAWK! (Translation: The first thing is definitely my voice. A close second would have to be my voluptuous body. I often hear people say, "Is that Beyoncé?")

What is your favourite pastime?

G: I love flouncing about the park, mesmerizing people with my beauty. The sun shines off my gleaming, golden feathers as I try to make some new friends.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

G: COUSCOUS. Couscous is a fluffy cloud of amazing. Not that I can taste the difference between that and anything else though, since chickens have a poor sense of taste.

What is your biggest achievement?

G: One time, I sat on three eggs at once and only one of them was mine! #TheseHipsDontLie

Ember the Black Copper Maran

Ember the Black Copper Maran

Hatch Date: March 17, 2014
Breed: Black Copper Maran
Traits: gorgeous, young, naive and soft like a bunny

What is the first thing people notice about you?

E: My head appears to be ablaze. It's not. Rather, you are taken by the fiery beauty of my copper head and hackle feathers, a sharp contrast to my black body feathers, which shine turquoise in the sun.

What is your favourite pastime?

E: I get satisfaction from staring at the ground. It makes me feel safe to watch for shadows and predators—coyotes, owls, people (#IFeelLikeChickenTonight). I also like to get as close to Downy as I can without Gourd getting mad at me. She has jealousy issues.

What is your biggest achievement?

E: Within two weeks of my introduction to the coop, I usurped Betty Blue’s place in the pecking order, bumping her to the bottom despite me being the freshest to the flock. It’s not hard to maintain my position, all I have to do is remind Betty Blue that I’m the celebrated unique egg-layer of the bunch with my chocolate brown beauties #BettyBeige.

Betty Blue the Ameraucana

Betty Blue the Ameraucana

Hatch Date: January 15, 2013
Breed: Ameraucana
Traits: quick and wily, loves foraging

What is the first thing people notice about you?

B: I'm usually making a huge mess on the pathway beside the stage, digging for worms, so people usually notice my filthy cheek feathers first. I'm also a speedy sprinter and a great egg layer (although my eggs aren’t blue like everyone thought they would be…blue genes just aren’t my thing!).

What is your favourite pastime?

B: My favourite pastime is digging and foraging. You'll usually find me by the stage among the ferns or sneaking into the garden beds when nobody’s watching. Don't mind me as I help myself to the delicious produce...

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

B: Whatever hasn’t already been snatched up by Downy, Gourd, or Ember #LifeAtTheBottom #PeckingOrderBlues.
