Betty Blue the Ameraucana

Betty Blue the Ameraucana

Hatch Date: January 15, 2013
Breed: Ameraucana
Traits: Quick and wily, loves foraging

What is the first thing people notice about you?

I'm usually making a huge mess on the pathway beside the stage, digging for worms, so people usually notice my filthy cheek feathers first. Although I've been slowing down with age, I'm still a great egg layer (although my eggs aren’t blue like everyone thought they would be…blue genes just aren’t my thing!).

What is your favourite pastime?

My favourite pastime is digging and foraging. You'll usually find me by the stage among the ferns or sneaking into the garden beds when nobody’s watching. Don't mind me as I help myself to the delicious produce…

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It's my first time at the top of the pecking order so I've got to remind the flock who's in charge by eating everything first! If I got to choose though, definitely mealworms. Earthworms make me a bit squirmy but I'll take them too!

Vanta the Svart Höna

Vanta the Svart Höna

Hatch Date: November 2018
Breed: Svart Höna
Traits: Small and speedy, talkative in the morning

What is the first thing people notice about you?

Definitely my all black appearance. I'm fibromelanistic meaning my body makes lots of melanin. Feathers, scales, even internal organs. My humans even named me for it, "vantablack" is the blackest black pigment.

What is your favourite pastime?

Probably watching park staff try to catch me for our weekly health check. I'm just too speedy for their big, clumsy legs. When I'm not doing that, you can probably find me perching somewhere high, I love a good view!

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I'm a little bit of a sweets fan. Cherries and berries (even if they aren't quite ripe yet) are what I look for but you better not give me cottage cheese… blegh!

Frida the Barnvelder

Frida the Barnvelder

Hatch Date: January 2019
Breed: Barnvelder
Traits: Curious and quiet

What is the first thing people notice about you?

Probably my beautifully patterned feathers (if I do say so myself). I take great pride in them and you'll often find me grooming myself in the morning to really make those feathers shine.

What is your favourite pastime?

It's the simple, daily pleasures for me: a good morning walk, following people around to see if they have treats, laying a nice egg. It's even better if I can do that with my best friend Vanta, we spend all our time together.

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

CUCUMBERS. Chopped cucumber, cucumbers hanging from a string, cucumbers in water, I love it all!

Dina the Cream Legbar

Frida the Barnvelder

Hatch Date: May 2019
Breed: Cream Legbar
Traits: Friendly, great forager

What is the first thing people notice about you?

One of the first things anyone ever noticed about me was that I was most likely female! Unlike most other chickens, you can tell male and female Cream Legbars like me apart as soon as we hatch. But now people mostly notice my majestic crest of feathers!

What is your favourite pastime?

Learning more about you! What's your favourite pastime? Can I do it with you? Do you have any food with you? Can I sit in your lap? Are we going for a walk? Is that food in your hand? Wait, but did you say you have food?

If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I'm not very picky when it comes to greens. Sorrel, clover, dandelions, they're all great! Even better if I can eat it right from your hand or walk around with you to find it.
