Lab Workshops Gallery Experiences Early-bird Access
Our hands-on, activity-based workshops are led by Science World staff and involve both adult chaperones and students. Allow for a minimum of 15 students and a maximum of 30 students per workshop, unless otherwise indicated. Cost is $1 per student.
Sounds We Hear

What can we use to listen to our heartbeat? In this program, children will discover how tools can help us hear sounds. The children will learn how to use stethoscopes to listen to their hearts and other objects. Come prepared to explore with homemade and actual stethoscopes. 25 students maximum.

How Animals Move

Waddle, crawl, gallop or hop? Your students will explore how animals move and why they move the way they do. They will discover what footprints tell us about animal movement. Come prepared to discover and imitate animals. 25 students maximum.

Roller Coaster

On this exciting journey through the ups and downs of force and motion, students will experiment with ramps and rolling objects to learn about gravity, friction and momentum. They'll use their discoveries to build roller coasters for ball bearings.

Inventing Machines

Reverse engineering! Students will take apart a vacuum cleaner to find the simple machines inside and wire a simple circuit to operate a fan. Along the way, they’ll ponder what it takes to be an inventor.

Chemistry

Rearrange some atoms! By doing experiments that pop, fizz and change colour, students will explore some clues that a chemical reaction is occurring. They’ll see indicator chemicals that distinguish acids from bases and chemicals that act as catalysts to speed up reactions.

City Chickens (in the Ken Spencer Science Park)

Meet the feathered residents of our outdoor science park and discover the role they play in urban farming. With props and demonstrations selected for the specific age group, our knowledgeable staff will tackle age-old questions such as: “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” and “Can chickens fly?”. This program will run rain or shine, so come dressed for the weather.

What’s the weather like today? Sunny, windy, rainy or cloudy? Students will discover what determines our local weather and learn to use simple meteorological instruments. This workshop will run rain or shine on the green roof, so dress for the weather.

Do your students think that the ozone hole is the name of the latest underground rock band, or that the food web is an online restaurant guide? Test their notions of environmental issues with our ultimate reality game show. Our zany host will lead teams through a series of challenges, each revealing concepts and concerns about our planet’s health. This program will run rain or shine, so come dressed for the weather.

Good vibrations! That's the secret to how sound is produced and heard. Students will learn the difference between pitch and volume and explore the art of transforming noise into music as they investigate the science of sounds.
