Girls and STEAM, presented by STEMCELL Technologies, is Science World’s primary program dedicated to encouraging girls* to explore careers in STEAM fields. We deliver outstanding programming throughout the year, so we’re always looking to connect with local community organizations and individuals in different ways.
Current Community Partnership Opportunity: Girls and STEAM Summit
The Girls and STEAM Summit is the flagship event of our year-long program. Last year, tickets for this free event sold out in a couple of hours! To make this year’s Summit bigger and better than ever, we’re currently looking for community partners to support with the upcoming Girls and STEAM Summit on Saturday November 15, 2025. Applications are open for the following opportunities:
Mentor Café professionals
Showcase booth exhibitors
For more information about these opportunities, please see below
Deadline: If you’re interested in either of these roles please complete this application form by Friday, September 12, 2025.
The Mentor Cafés are small sessions where girls get to connect with STEAM professionals in a small group setting. They’re a great opportunity for you to connect with girls. You get a chance to potentially inspire future female STEAM leaders, and they get to connect with female professionals!
What would I do at a Mentor Café?
Mentors are asked to represent themselves from a “whole-person” perspective to help break stereotypes about “who does STEAM” and what pursuing a STEAM career means for women. Stories and objects related to the mentor’s background, hobbies, and other things they do outside of their job are all encouraged!
What are you looking for in a mentor?
Someone who…
has an interesting and/or unconventional STEAM career path or job.
can articulate “a day in the life” of their STEAM job to 12 to 14-year-olds.
can bring an object (or two!) that represents your “tools of trade” as show-and-tell conversation starters.
demonstrates a comfort level interacting with youth.
can commit to at least 2.5 hours on event day (Morning or Afternoon sessions) or for the full day from 9:30am – 4pm!
What do I need to do on event day?
The 45-minute-long Mentor Café sessions will take place in Science World classrooms and exhibit spaces. You (and possibly another mentor) will be stationed at a table and will be provided a set of prompts, simple games, and their show-and-tell items to interact with small groups of 6 – 8 girls who rotate every 10 – 12 minutes. You’ll get the chance to directly interact with—and potentially influence the career explorations of—a total of 100 girls per Morning or Afternoon session.
Showcase Booths
The Girls and STEAM industry showcase will highlight organisations within STEAM fields by using hands-on activities and insightful conversations. At the event, showcase booths will be located at tables throughout Science World.
This opportunity is open to non-profits and community organisations. If you are from a for-profit organisation and would like to be involved, please reach out to our Development team at [email protected]
Tell me more about the Showcase Booths!
Each organization will be asked to include an activity that highlights the work they do in a fun and exciting way. We ask that your showcase table activity is an engaging task, challenge, game or craft that represents or recreates an actual task performed in a STEAM career. Showcase hosts will also act as role models by sharing stories of their own work and career inspirations, promoting additional STEAM opportunities for youth in the wider community, and highlighting networks of career support for women in STEAM fields. Girls and STEAM participants will be given passports which can be stamped when they visit your booth.
What are the requirements for hosting a showcase booth?
Must be a local organization in Vancouver
Ensure a minimum of 2 hosts are at your table from 9:30am–5:00pm.
Ensure 50% of hosts identify as women, trans, genderqueer, non-binary, two-spirit, or gender-questioning.
What do I need to do on event day?
Keep activities accessible to a wide age range – from toddlers to seniors – because Science World will be open to the public during the Summit.
Keep activities short and sweet (with short reset times) to avoid lineups.
Explore learning through simple, hands-on activities.
Expect a steady stream of guests throughout the day.
Investigate links to STEAM career possibilities related to the activity.
Help! I need some inspiration for my booth!
We’ve seen some fantastic showcase booth activities over the years! To help inspire your booth activity, here are some examples of the most engaging activities we’ve seen:
Forensic science: Print your own fingerprints.
Veterinarian: Listen to therapy dogs’ hearts using a stethoscope.
Engineering: Build marshmallow structures and test durability.
Video Games: Try a video game simulator to see how changes affect the simulation.
Geology: Explore volcanoes through real rock and mineral samples.
Animation: Animate your own object or character.
Some examples from previous booths:
*Please note: Girls and STEAM is inclusive of those who identify as women, girls, trans, genderqueer, non-binary, two-spirit, and gender questioning.
