Aligning with our mission to ignite wonder and empower dreams through science and nature, Science World launched Online Environmental Education Programming in fall 2021 in conjunction with the feature exhibition, Backyard Adventures. Backyard Adventures inspired visitors to connect with nature and see that science is everywhere—including our backyards!
Presented by Odlum Brown Limited, Online Environmental Education Programming provides learners and their families across British Columbia with online family programming and resources, online school workshops, and teacher resources and workshops.
Program Schedule
Backyard CSI (Conservation Science Investigation)
Join us from the comfort of your home for an exploration into the impact of invasive species in British Columbia, including the Japanese Beetle. We'll explore what invasive species are, why they're so dangerous to us and the places we live, and lots more with guests from the Invasive Species Council of BC.
Backyard Community Science
Join us from the comfort of your home for a look into apps like iNaturalist and Find the Birds that encourage us to step outside, investigate the nature in our own backyards and communities, and get involved in community science. With community science apps you can identify and catalogue the plant and animal populations that live around you, share it with scientists online, and play an active role in the conservation of our environment!
Backyard Creature Feature
Join us from the comfort of your home for an exploration into some backyard animals that may seem scary but are important to our ecosystem, like crows which consume tons of waste every year, preventing the spread of diseases, and bees which gather nectar from flowers to make honey and supporting the growth of flowers, plants, and trees!
Backyard Exploration
Join us from the comfort of your home for a look into the different meanings and relationships you can have to a “backyard.” We'll explore Canada’s Arctic, which makes up almost 55 per cent of Canada's landmass and has been home to many Indigenous peoples for thousands of years, as well as polar bears, narwhals, walruses and other incredible Arctic plants and animals.
Stories of the Seasons
Join us from the comfort of your home for an exploration into the ways your backyard explorations can change as we move through the different seasons of the year.
For Schools
Science for a Changing World (Online Science Adventure)
This interactive online school program explores the fundamentals of environmental science to empower learners with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to understand the world around them and to help recognize and address interconnected global challenges in achieving sustainability. Students reflect on the diversity of life via a close-up investigation as they adventure through a virtual field trip through Science World exploring a variety of adaptations, habitats, and ecosystems of some of the amazing living organisms currently on exhibition.
Les Sciences Super-Naturelles (Online Science Adventure)
This french-language interactive online school program spans over two sessions to explore the fundamentals of environmental science. Learners are tasked with an outdoor exploration task between sessions to encourage place-based discovery and investigation.
This program is currently being developed and delivered through an agreement with the CSF and may open up to additional classes in fall 2022.
