Resources

Science World has supported fun and engaging science education since 1989 with award-winning programming for BC teachers, parents and students. Our vast collection of resources are teacher reviewed, classroom tested and matched to BCs transformed curriculum by grade.

Please use the search field and filters on the right to find an activity or unit that suits you and your learners. Not sure what a discrepant event is? Learn more about this powerful technique for inquiry learning.

April Is Resources Month!

Science Teacher

Science World is committed to supporting BC teachers and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design, and Mathematics) education. Science World holds special events for teachers, like our upcoming Teachers' Night Out, we also offer teacher professional development workshops, and connect classes with scientists through our Scientists and Innovators in the Schools program.

Did you know that Science World has over 300 FREE resources available on our website?  Learning activities are searchable by topic or grade level, and some are grouped into mini units. Simply enter your search term into the website's search bar to find, say, a unit on states of matter.  We also have a fantastic collection of discrepant events that can serve as launchpads for student inquiry.

For all of April, we will be highlighting our teaching resources on twitter.  Celebrate by making use of our resources!

  1. Find an activity from our online collection of free resources (www.scienceworld.ca/resources).
  2. Try it out with your students.
  3. Leave a comment on the activity page describing how you used the activity, what you modified or your suggestions for its use for other teachers.

In this make and take, students move their boats by varying the water's surface tension with soap. The attraction of water molecules to each other (cohesion) can be weakened by the addition of soap/detergent. The attraction between water particles at the water's surface produces surface tension. The...

Students use various materials to focus the sun's rays and make solar s'mores! In North America, we use electricity or gas to cook our food. But over half the world's population uses wood or animal dung to cook. In fact, every year, almost 2 billion tones of wood is burned in cooking fires. In the...

The transfer of energy from potential energy to kinetic energy is easy to understand (and fun to learn about!) with a catapult. A catapult is a machine that stores energy then quickly releases it to fire a projectile. This activity allows students to build their own catapult and experience how...

As an airplane moves through the air, the air resists the motion of the aircraft. This resistance force is called drag, drag always works in the opposite direction of motion (opposite to the thrust force). There are many factors that affect the size of the drag force, including the shape of...

Finding the centre of gravity of an irregularly-shaped object is trickier than for a ruler or other regular shape. In this activity, students use the force of gravity to deduce the centre of gravity for various shapes.Since the weight of an object is concentrated in its centre of gravity, the force...
