What is the Barbara Brink Internship?
The Barbara Brink internship is a position offered to one graduating high school student in British Columbia each year. The selected student works alongside Science World staff and over the course of the summer, designs and completes a project. The scholarship is so named to honour Ms Barbara Brink, a member of the Order of BC and a Friend of Science World.
In April, 34 candidates completed an application, answering an open-ended question that focused on science, creativity and working with kids. Fortunately for Braeden, these were his strong suits, so he had a lot to write about! In late May, several of the candidates were interviewed by Science World’s Community Engagement team and Braeden was chosen for the internship.
About me
I have lived in North Vancouver my whole life and have been a fan of science since day one. As a kid, I asked enough questions to drive my parents insane and made many a mess trying to test my ideas. In high school, besides studying and tutoring chemistry, physics and math, I was heavily involved with my school’s music program. I served as leader of the bass section in the senior concert band, I was a co-chair on the Music Council, I chaperoned several ensemble trips and I was project leader for the plan to build a recording studio.
I play jazz guitar and concert contrabass. Don’t confuse the two as I (sadly) cannot play jazz bass or classical guitar. After this internship comes to an end, I will be going to university in Ontario to study engineering.
What I’ll be doing this summer
During my internship, I will use my background in music by working on Science World’s upcoming exhibition, AMPED. In addition to AMPED, I will be facilitating exhibits and interacting with customers at TELUS World of Science. Look for more posts from me throughout the next 6 weeks!
