Wings & Things: Exploring Insects, Matter and Motion
In "Wings & Things", students will explore insects and their observable features, everyday materials, and motion, while creating critters and using force to observe them “fly”!
In this workshop, students will be encouraged to use their bodies to mimic the ideas being explored while investigating three BC insects and their observable features. We will examine matter through familiar materials such as cardboard, foam and plastic. Each student will create a critter from the materials, to investigate the forces of flight! There will be an opportunity to measure and graph how far the critters “flew” and discuss observations.
Join us and get excited about insects, materials and motion in this engaging and energetic workshop!

Curriculum Links
Science Kindergarten
- Animals have observable features that help them meet their basic needs
- Humans interact with matter every day through familiar materials
- The motion of objects depends on their properties
- Effects of pushes/pulls on movement
- Make simple measurements using non-standard units
- Share observations and ideas orally
Science 1
- Living things have features and behaviours that help them survive in their environment
- Safely manipulate materials to test ideas and predictions
- Specific properties of materials allow us to use them in different ways
- Make and record simple measurements using non-standard units
- Names of local animals
Arts Education K/1
- Engagement in the arts creates opportunities for inquiry through purposeful play
- People connect to others and share ideas through the arts
Many curricular competencies from Science and Arts Education are incorporated.
