Your Voice Is Power

This workshop, developed by our friends at TakingITGlobal, incorporates stories from Indigenous role models, and allows students to build AI literacy skills through exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the creative writing process.

Inspired by powerful stories from Indigenous role models, students will explore creative songwriting and the opinions of an Indigenous songwriter on AI as a creative tool. Students will understand best practices and limitations of generative AI by comparing the process of composing lyrics both with and without AI. They will consider issues of plagiarism, copyright, hallucinations, and bias in artificial intelligence.

Pre-Workshop Activity (optional, strongly encouraged)

Doing this ahead of time is optional but will allow students to spend more time with the stories, have more time to reflect, and will overall enrich the experience.

In groups of 2, have students:

  1. Review the Indigenous Role Models, found on this webpage: yourvoiceispower.ca/ai/songwriter-stories
  2. Identify one of the Indigenous role models to inspire your song writing.
  3. Identify and write down key story elements.
    • What is the name of your selected role model?
    • How would you describe this person?
    • What message or lesson did their story share?
    • What challenges did they overcome?
    • What emotions did the story evoke?
    • What part of the story resonated most with you?
  4. List 10 key words relating to the story. For each one, brainstorm 2-3 rhyming words that also connect to the theme of the story.
  5. Bring all your notes to Science World for the workshop!
