Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How much time will I have to dedicate to the program outside of the weekly meetings?
A. We ask that you reserve 5 hours per week for Future Science Leaders, including attendance at the session. You will be asked to write blog posts, read articles or complete an activity at home.

Q. What if I can't make it to one of the weekly meetings?
A. You will need to advise the program organizer/s prior to the class. You must have a 90% attendance rate to be eligible for additional benefits to the program such as field trips.

Q. How much does the program cost?
A. The program costs $475. This fee will be due when you accept a position in the program. There are bursaries available so no student will be rejected from the program based on monetary circumstances.

Q. Can parents be involved in the program?
A. Please contact the program organizers if your parents want to be involved in the program ([email protected]).

Q. Will this program count towards my school results?
A. This program is not a part of the high school curriculum, and therefore will not count towards your school results. We do expect that lessons learned will be helpful for your courses.

Q. Will we be graded on our projects?
A. You will not be formally assessed on your projects but you will receive feedback. We encourage and support students who wish to enter their project in competitions and science fairs across North America.

Q. What if I can't get my final transcript or report card by the application deadline?
A. You can complete your application with last year's report card and/or any interim marks that you received for this year.

Q. Is there support offered to ensure all of my school work and extracurricular activities are all balanced?
A. Outside of your personal and school community, there will be a number of program organizers and Science World community members that will be available to offer further support and mentoring. However your final schedule and commitments are your responsibility.

Q. Will this assist with/be applicable to my university application?
A. This program can be included in your extracurricular activities and bolster your application to universities. However, there is no current formal recognition from universities for raising the profile of your application.

Q. Will all of the sessions take place at Science World at TELUS World of Science?
A. Each weekly meeting will take place at Science World at TELUS World of Science unless there is a field trip or industry tour. There will be advanced notice of any field trips.

FSL Discover Sept 2020–May 2021 program information

Students will choose one session to go to out of:

  • Tuesdays 4-6pm at Science World, Vancouver
  • Tuesday 6:30-8:30pm at Science World, Vancouver
  • Wednesdays 4:30-6:30pm at the Health and Technology Innovation Hub, Surrey

Students who will be in grades 10 and 11 in Sept 2020 can apply Application due date: May 1st 2020. The cost of the program is $500 plus tax. Bursaries are available.
